Mrs Cathy McCusker – Senior Professional Officer

Cathy McCusker is a Senior Professional Officer for Professional Development at the Northern Ireland Practice and Education Council for Nursing and Midwifery (NIPEC).

Cathy was appointed to her current post in 2006 and leads on a wide range of projects. Cathy’s specialist interests are in the development of competency frameworks, self-assessment tools and using quality improvement methodologies to improve care and services. Cathy is currently working on finalising the Career Framework for Specialist Practice Nursing roles, collaborating with CNO and Quality Improvement leaders in HSC to develop the content and format of programmes to support the Attributes Framework. Cathy has responsibility for ensuring the NIPEC online portfolio remains fit for purpose and that the nursing and midwifery career pathway website is regularly updated. Cathy is also responsible for NIPEC’s SCAN publication and leads the NIPEC Conference Planning Team for the annual conference.

Cathy qualified as an RGN in 1985 and RM in 1987. Prior to joining NIPEC, Cathy worked as a Senior Manager in the Royal Victoria Hospital and as a Management Development Consultant in Beeches Management Centre. She was also seconded to NIPEC as Project Manager for the Development Framework Project from 2004-2006.

Cathy has a Bsc(Hons) Professional Development in Nursing and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Ulster. Cathy has undertaken additional development in Quality Improvement. Following completion of South Eastern Trust SQE Programme in 2016, Cathy undertook Institute Health Improvement, Improvement Advisor Programme (Wave 46) which she successfully graduated from in January 2018. Cathy is also a member of Q (Health Foundation).
