The Northern Ireland Practice and Education Council for Nursing and Midwifery (NIPEC) was commissioned in April 2013 by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Charlotte McArdle to conduct a review of how the Manchester Triage System (MTS) cascade training is organised across the five HSC Trusts in Northern Ireland.

Triage is a nursing role and the first activity performed by the nurses when a patient arrives in the emergency department and the point at which all care begins. The role of the triage nurse is central to the effective and efficient operation of the emergency department. Emergency departments are routinely unpredictable settings, the finite resources of the emergency department emphasises the need for timely and accurate triage decisions that ultimately underpin optimal health care delivery.

NIPEC engaged via the EDoN with emergency nursing colleagues across all HSC Trusts to progress this review. The final report sets out the findings from the review and makes recommendations regarding the on-going delivery of the MTS cascade training.
