It is an exciting and challenging time to be part of the nursing and midwifery workforce in Northern Ireland. Throughout a recent unprecedented period of change, the delivery of safe, high quality, effective and compassionate care has heavily relied upon the community of nurses and midwives working across a diverse and wide range of settings with the aim of providing person-centred care 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. In Northern Ireland, a range of recent policy directives have reflected the changing context of Health and Social Care and set the direction for future service delivery including Transforming Your Care, Quality 2020 and Health and Wellbeing 2026: Delivering Together.

This project focussed on the specific career pathway of Older People’s Nursing across the statutory, independent, voluntary and private sectors and within the areas of clinical, education, management, research, commissioning and policy.

A regional task and finish group, Chaired by Jane Greene (Consultant Nurse for Older People, Southern HSC Trust) was established to conduct this work and to gather and agree relevant resources to meet the needs of nurses in planning their career in the care of Older People. In addition the Public Health Agency secured funding from the Burdett Trust for Nursing to complete"Project RETAIN", in order to improve nurse retention and recruitment in care of older people’s settings;  view the Project Report. The information gathered through both Projects was used to promote a career in Older People's Nursing and support nurses planning a career in this worthwhile area of practice.
