Impact Measurement of the Preceptorship Framework

25 June 2025

NIPEC is currently conducting an impact assessment of the Northern Ireland Preceptorship Framework for Nursing and Midwifery (2022).

Purpose of the Assessment

This evaluation aims to measure how the framework has influenced the professional development, confidence, and preparedness of the following groups:

  • Newly registered nurses and midwives
  • Internationally educated nurses and midwives
  • Nurses and midwives returning to practice

Methodology

We are using a mixed-methods approach, including:

  • Online surveys and focus groups involving Preceptees, Preceptors, and their Line Managers
  • Targeted surveys for professional leads and senior leaders across HSC Trusts, independent providers, and the primary care sector

Data collection and analysis will run from May to August 2025.

Outcomes

A final report presenting the findings, conclusions, and recommendations will be:

  • Published on the NIPEC website
  • Shared with key stakeholders
  • Used to inform NIPEC’s future strategic and operational planning

PROJECT UPDATE

An online survey was conducted (June 2025) to explore the impact of the Preceptorship Framework (2022), following which, a focus group with Professional Leads was held on the 23rd July. The feedback and survey results have now been analysed and a report has been developed.  It will be presented to the Chief Nursing Officer, NIPEC Council and key stakeholders, as well as uploaded to the website during January 2026.
