NIPEC Launches New Regional Standards for Person centred Nursing and Midwifery Documentation

15 April 2026

NIPEC has formally launched the Standards for Person‑centred Nursing and Midwifery Documentation, providing a clear, region‑wide framework to support high‑quality, consistent record‑keeping across all care settings.

Launched on the 27th March 2026 through a regional webinar with representation from health and social care trusts, independent and voluntary sector organisations, education providers and professional bodies, the Standards reinforce that documentation is a core element of professional nursing and midwifery practice and a key enabler of safe, compassionate care.

Speaking at the launch, Linda Kelly, Chief Executive of NIPEC, highlighted the professional importance of this work and the collective effort behind it:

“This work truly is a reflection of how we can work together across nursing and midwifery across all of Northern Ireland. It is not just a technical piece of work – it is a professional priority.”

The Standards are structured around four core areas: person‑centred care, content, presentation and assurance. Together, they set clear expectations for how documentation should demonstrate shared decision‑making, professional judgement, effective communication and accountability, whether records are handwritten or digital.

Ms Kelly also emphasised the role of documentation in evidencing the quality of care provided:

“Documentation is integral to professional practice. It reflects the quality of care that we provide and supports our clinical judgement.”

The Standards apply across all nursing and midwifery services in Northern Ireland and recognise the increasing use of digital systems. While technology can support practice, professional accountability remains with registered nurses and midwives, including when documentation is completed under delegated authority.

Organisations should adopt the Standards locally, using them to inform education, supervision and quality assurance processes. NIPEC will continue to work with regional partners to support implementation and ensure the Standards remain responsive to changes in practice and digital innovation.

The full Standards for Person‑centred Nursing and Midwifery Documentation are available on the NIPEC website and are intended to support nurses, midwives and support staff in consistently demonstrating high‑quality, person‑centred care through clear and effective documentation.
