NI – NMC Post Registration Standards Implementation Project

Project Overview

The NMC Post-registration Standards (NMC, 2023)  also includes the NMC Standards of proficiency for specialist community public health nursing (SCPHN) (NMC, 2022) and the NMC Standards of proficiency for community nursing specialist practice qualifications (SPQ) (NMC, 2022). These new evidenced based standards and proficiencies set out the necessary knowledge and skills nurses and midwives need, so they can provide the highest standard of specialist community, and public health nursing practice, to people in their homes and across community settings.

Access the NMC Post-registration standards and the proficiencies.

In January 2023, the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Maria McIlgorm commissioned NIPEC to lead on the implementation of the NMC post-registration standards. In partnership with key stakeholders, NIPEC has led a regional approach to oversee and ensure the out workings of the new NMC standards are cohesively embedded into education and practice by September 2024.

A post-registration standards Steering Group was established in January 2022 to oversee this work ensuring that the resources, systems and processes were in place for the implementation of the new standards.  The post-registration standards Collaborative was established in April 2023, with the remit of working in partnership with the Approved Education Institutions (AEIs) and practice partners to ensure  a standardised, regional process applied to the implementation of the standards.

The work related to this implementation project concluded in December 2024 with consensus by the Steering Group that all project objectives were completed. All future work related to the NMC Post-registration Standards will be progressed by the education and practice learning partners, with oversight provided within the Northern Ireland Practice Learning Collaborative (NIPLC).
