Senior Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Engagement Event

20 March 2025

Nursing and midwifery staff from across HSC met recently at the Senior Nursing and Midwifery Strategic Community of Practice.

Guest speaker at the event organised by NIPEC in their James House Offices in Belfast was Mike Collins. Mike previously spent 20 years as a Nurse in the Army, with experience in governance, assurance and project management in the innovation and implementation arena. Currently Mike is studying for a Professional Doctorate in Nursing, looking at how nurses working in non-clinical roles develop, sustain, and cohere their professional identities, and in 2019 completed an MSc in Occupational Psychology. Mike was awarded an ARRC for services to military nursing in the 2023 New Year’s Honours List.

Speaking at the event Linda Kelly, NIPEC Chief Executive commented:

“We are excited that Mike Collins, Managing Consultant and Clinical Safety Lead at a global IT consultancy, was able to join us at the event. Mike explored healthcare transformation and professional identity, rediscovering why professional identity is fundamental to nursing leadership and practice in today’s healthcare system.  We had some very insightful and stimulating discussions.”

Participants from HSC Trusts, education providers and health’s arms’ length bodies enjoyed the interactive session and left with ideas to help them proactively promote their professional identity and inspire colleagues to do the same.
