The District Nursing Framework (2018) published by the Department of Health sets out the way forward for the delivery of a world class district nursing service that will be available 24 hours a day. It is designed to support the delivery of safe and effective person centred care by district nurses and their teams in community settings, in line with the overall ambitions of Health and Wellbeing 2026: Delivering Together (DOH 2016).
NIPEC on behalf of the Chief Nursing Officer led the development of a career pathway to promote and support District Nursing roles in NI. The Project Steering Group was chaired by Gabby Tinsley, who was a Community Divisional Nurse, Adult, Community & Older Peoples Service. Core competencies, educational/development requirements & job descriptions were developed and tested with District Nursing teams for the following core roles within the District Nursing career pathway: Senior Nursing Assistant, Community Staff Nurse, Senior Community Staff Nurse, District Nurse, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Consultant Nurse. The writing group was made up of District Nurses, HR, Regional Trade Union Forum, CEC, Ulster University, PHA & NIPEC. The District Nurse JD has been job matched and evaluated as a Band 7.
