Nursing
PRE-REGISTRATION NURSING EDUCATION IN NORTHERN IRELAND
In Northern Ireland, pre-registration nurse education programmes are currently commissioned by the Department of Health (DoH) and are provided by three Universities.
- Queen’s University, Belfast offer pre-registration programmes across the four fields of Nursing: Adult, Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Children’s and Young People.
- Ulster University offer pre-registration programmes in Adult Nursing and Mental Health Nursing.
- The Open University in Belfast, Northern Ireland provides programmes across the four fields of Nursing: Adult, Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Children’s and Young People’s in partnership with the Health and Social Care (HSC)Trusts. Applicants for these programmes must be employees of the partner HSC Trust.
Queen’s University, Belfast also offer pre-registration Masters in Professional Nursing programmes, currently in Adult Nursing and Children’s and Young People. Plans are in place to extend this to Learning Disabilities Nursing and Mental Health Nursing in the near future. All applicants to these programmes must have a primary degree.

Midwifery
PRE-REGISTRATION MIDWIFERY EDUCATION IN NORTHERN IRELAND
In Northern Ireland, pre-registration midwifery education programmes are currently commissioned by the Department of Health (DoH) and provided by Queen’s University, Belfast. These include:
- Direct entry pre-registration midwifery programme
- Masters in midwifery programme. Applicants must be registered as an Adult Nurse on the Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) register.
