Mental Health Nursing: Partnering for Wellbeing and Enabling Recovery

This Mental Health Nursing:’Partnering for Wellbeing and Enabling Recovery’ is currently under development and therefore not final and should not be read as accurate or complete.

Partnering for Wellbeing and Enabling Recovery sets out a new vision for mental health nursing in Northern Ireland, recognising the vital contribution of mental health nurses in promoting wellbeing, prevention, recovery and person-centred care. The model places people, families and communities at the centre and is built around prevention, recovery, partnership and evidence-based care, supported by workforce development, education, governance and clinical leadership.

Through 25 recommendations aligned to the priorities of Shaping Our Future 2023-2028, the review provides a roadmap for a sustainable and skilled workforce. Key priorities include expanding pre-registration training places and strengthening recruitment and retention; developing quality outcome measures and nursing practice metrics; enhancing education in therapeutic interventions, pharmacology and digital skills; and creating clearer clinical career pathways through increased specialist, advanced and consultant nurse roles. Together, these actions will help ensure the right care, at the right time, delivered by the right professional, while enabling recovery-focused mental health services for the future.
