About Us

The Northern Ireland Practice and Education Council for Nursing and Midwifery (NIPEC) was established by the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2002 under the Health and Personal social Services Act as an NDPB (Non Departmental Public Body) to support the development of nurses and midwives by promoting high standards of practice, education and professional development. NIPEC also provides advice and guidance on best practice and matters relating to nursing and midwifery.

NIPEC Council has a membership of 9 professional members (including Chair), 6 lay members, the Chief Executive of NIPEC (Executive Member) and the Chief Nursing Officer, DoH(Ex-Officio Member). The Council meets on a quarterly basis, usually on the third Wednesday in the months of March, June, September and November, with the meetings commencing at 2pm. NIPEC’s Health and Social Wellbeing Committee was set up in 2015 with the objective of nurturing and improving staff relationships and supporting staff in accessing a range of activities aimed at improving their health and wellbeing – more information can be found by  clicking on the link on the right hand side menu.
