Dr Gary Mitchell is a Reader in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), where he serves as Director for Postgraduate Taught Education. Dr Mitchell has extensive clinical and academic expertise in the care of older people and is widely recognised for his contributions to gerontological nursing. He was appointed Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours for services to nursing and dementia care. A Queen’s Nurse (QN) and a Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Science (FEANS), Dr Mitchell also serves on its Senior Executive Board. He has authored over 250 research outputs, secured extensive grant funding, and supervises a growing number of PhD students. He is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and has received multiple teaching excellence awards at Queen’s, including student-nominated and team-based recognitions. His work continues to inform national and international policy and practice. Dr Mitchell is a former trustee of Age NI and previously chaired the Royal College of Nursing’s UK Older People’s Forum. He serves on the editorial boards of four international nursing journals and sits on the NICE Clinical Guideline Committee for CG103: Delirium: Prevention, Diagnosis and Management.
Dr Mitchell plays an active role in national research strategy through his work with the NIHR’s Research Programme for Social Care and its Decarbonising Health and Social Care Committee. In addition, he is a Fellow of Evidence Synthesis Ireland, a former leadership coach for the Council of Deans of Health’s #150 Leaders programme, and serves as external examiner for nursing programmes at three universities across the UK and Ireland.
