Delivering Care: Nursing and Midwifery Staffing in Northern Ireland

In 2011, the Chief Nursing Officer for Northern Ireland commissioned the Director of Nursing and Allied Health Professions at the Public Health Agency to develop a framework to ensure appropriate nursing and midwifery staffing levels across a range of service areas in Northern Ireland. NIPEC worked in partnership with the PHA from 2011, resulting in the policy adoption of Delivering Care Phase 1: medical and surgical generalist and specialist care settings and a recurrent investment of over £12 million in nurse staffing in these areas. The policy framework definitions continues to support constructive conversations to take place between commissioners and service providers.

Subsequently, on conclusion of the first Phase, the Minister for Health, Edwin Poots MLA, announced the Delivering Care Framework as policy 27 January 2014. Final versions of the documents can be viewed in pdf format by clicking on the links below.
