In 2011, the DHSSPS Promoting Good Nutrition Strategy 2011 – 2016 was launched aimed at improving the nutritional care of adults in all health and social care settings across Northern Ireland. In 2012, the DHSSPS Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) asked NIPEC to lead work to develop resources to support improvements in nutritional care in practice, in collaboration with a range of stakeholders. |
To progress the work, a Steering Group was established which included representation from across the nutritional care pathway including Dietetics, Nursing, General Practice and the British Dietetic Association as well as the Royal College of Nursing, Education Providers, DoH and NIPEC. Guidance and resources to support the use of ‘MUST’ across all care settings, developed by the Steering Group, were launched at the CNO Conference in 2013.
Considerable investment has been expended to ensure the Guidance and resources to support the use of ‘MUST’ across all care settings have become embedded in practice. In light of this, during 2015 the CNO asked NIPEC to measure the impact of the resources within health and social care settings across Northern Ireland. It was agreed that this should not be undertaken until the Community Promoting Good Nutrition Steering Group, chaired by Nicki Patterson on behalf of the Public Health Agency has completed its programme of work.
