NMC Standards for Learning & Assessment in Practice

The NMC published these standards in 2006. They detail the requirements for training, support and management of mentors, practice teachers and teachers supporting and assessing students on NMC regulated programmes. The main purpose of the standards is to strengthen learning and assessment in practice. The NMC requires that students are supported in practice by mentors or practice teachers who meet NMC standards.

NIPEC project managed the implementation of the standards in Northern Ireland at the request of the DHSSPS. The key aim of the project was to implement the standards using a regional approach, which required close collaboration between the key stakeholders. The project commenced in January 2007 and was completed in May 2008. A copy of the final report can be downloaded by clicking below.

To facilitate this a project structure was set up view the Steering Group here and the Project Group here representing key stakeholders across the education sector and service sector including the Health and Social Care (HSC) and Independent Sectors. A Senior Officer from NIPEC was the Project Lead and a Project Manager from an HSC Trust was appointed. A detailed work programme was taken forward resulting in the publication of a number of key documents, which can be downloaded by clicking on the links below:
