Senior Professional Officer

Gary joined NIPEC in December 2023 as a Senior Professional Officer . He qualified as a registered nurse in 2006 working in the Royal Victoria Hospital Thoracic Surgery Unit. Gary moved to the Care Home sector in 2010, initially as a Deputy Care Home Manager before progressing to various senior roles including Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) lead and most recently Operations Manager in Beaumont Care Homes.

During the 13 years Gary worked within Care Homes he, completed his PgCert in IPC and led various service development projects including an IPC link staff programme for which Gary won the British Journal of Nursing (BJN) IPC Nurse of the Year award in 2016 and was runner-up for the same award in 2017 for his work on Influenza awareness and management in Care Homes. From 2018-2020 Gary was seconded to the Public Health Agency, working as Nurse Consultant for Care Homes, supporting the regional transformation strategy. Gary has published/co-published nursing journal papers on IPC and staffing models in Care Homes, he is currently on the editorial advisory board for the RCNi Nursing Older People journal.

Gary has led on significant regional programmes of work chairing the IPC sub-group of the Rapid Learning Initiative in Care Homes and with a strong interest in Digital Health, he co-chaired the Enhancing Digital Technology workstream of the CNO’s Enhancing Clinical Care Framework.
